I’ve Seen the Next “Great One” in Person
By David Droschak on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 9:32 AM
Rarely do I get excited about amateur golf. It’s like football recruiting to me: A lot of hype and usually not much substance. So and so is the next Tiger Woods or Annika Sorenstam. How many times have we heard that overblown proclamation in the last two decades from followers of junior golf?

By David Droschak on Monday, July 07, 2008 3:19 PM
Are we back to the good ole days in Major League Baseball where a base hit is really worth something and going from first-to-third on a single to right field is about good base running and hustle?

Get up you couch potatoes! There has never been a better time to head to the gym, take a walk around the lake or earn some brownie points with your woman through a weekend trip to the mall to shop for shoes. We can thank Tiger Woods for all the free time.

Coming in October: The Swimsuit Series
By David Droschak on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3:23 PM
Forget about the Subway Series. How about the Swimsuit Series? As in the Florida Marlins vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. I know, I may be getting a little bit carried away in mid May, but one-quarter of the way through the baseball season the “lowly” Marlins, with their measly $21.8 million payroll, and the Rays, with their new nickname and group of young and fearless position players, sit atop their respective divisions, tied for the second-best record in the majors.

By David Droschak on Tuesday, April 08, 2008 6:26 PM
Please tell me again why some college basketball coaches get paid $2 million a season? John Calipari’s blunder in the final seconds of the national title game would have been grounds for an early boot from Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice TV show.

ACC Tourney Coverage - Virginia Tech
By David Droschak on Friday, March 14, 2008 7:04 PM

As Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg puts it, his young Hokies have had some cleansing moments this season. Like back-to-back losses in mid February when they were outrebounded by 15 at home to Miami, followed up by a 92-53 humiliation in Chapel Hill when the opposing board domination reached 30.

A four-game winning streak near the end of the regular season and a turnaround on the glass wiped away some of the late frustration and put Virginia Tech squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble at 18-12.

Then came Friday and the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, playing in front of former Hokie great Dell Curry, who sat close enough to Greenberg to whisper plays into his ear, and against a Miami club that itself had put together a decent postseason calling card.

With a potential postseason bid on the line, Greenberg’s crew trusted each other like n ...

My Top 10 Rule Changes in Sports
By David Droschak on Thursday, March 06, 2008 6:27 PM
After covering sports for close to 30 years, I often think I’ve seen it all. Then something strange, bizarre or out-of-left field comes along and I shake my head like the rest of you. One moment like this occurred a month ago when the Carolina Hurricanes surrendered two short-handed goals – on the same shift – and three overall in a period. Never seen that one before -- and probably won’t ever again.
